Spring project dump post!
I've been happily busy in my outside space with tons of projects. I'm finding more and more that I am a creature of chaos. I have maybe 8 projects going all at once. So, without more gabbing...here's what I've been up to in my garden this spring. Enjoy.
I drew out plans for changing our front yard, including moving out our fence and building a Nature Library (post on that to come)....it was approved!!!
This big project will include: moving out our side fence
making a path up to a big arch with either roses or grapes
redoing the sprinklers
putting in mulch in front of the side fence, putting in new soaker hoses
putting in edging
planting two trees
planting lots more small to mid size plants in front flower bed
taking old fence, cutting it shorter, taking every other picket out and putting up that fence around the shed to create my itty bitty mini first ever Adventure Garden!!!!!!
Found and picked up free materials on our local neighborhood app. I used these as edging in front flower bed to replace just old fence pickets I put up as temp fix last fall.
Picked up two van trunk loads of steer manure and spread it on front and back lawn and watered deep.
Got one pickup load of black gold...garden soil.
Made a twin box frame into a growing bed for onions.
This was in March: brought table into my bedroom to start seeds. It is the only safe place from toddler and cat.
Had a GIANT planter built. It is 11 feet long, three feet tall and two feet deep. Then I picked up several van loads of logs, branches and sticks to go on bottom of planter to make Hugelkultur bed. I will do separate post on all that went into that and more info on Hugelkultur.
Stress tested out the van's carrying capacity. Picked up van load of free bricks!! So excited!! I traded the lovely lady these bricks for information on companion planting. Isaac had a fun time being my brick layer in the van.
Brainstormed more plans for front yard...I hope my neighbors are patient with the mess for this season. It is gonna be such a fun project and so much work but so worth it. Many more posts to come on this project.
We finally bought a box trailer!!! I love it so much. Now to practice backing it up.
This was my first load: pine logs. Posts coming on these too....so many ideas of what to use these for. How to decide?
Finally started my garden calander. I used the first month to just write out what I did in March.
So. Many. Materials!! This makes me so happy. These were all materials on their way to the landfill. I get so excited about finding materials and giving them new life. Ideas explode on how to use them in the yard and garden....many sleepless nights. Many more pages filled out on my future Adventure Garden business!!!!
Repourposed old kiddie pools! I cut out the bottoms and arranged them to fill with strawberries. I put some leaves in the bottom and topped with my lovely garden soil. I got straw to top off with but haven't done it yet. The strawberries are planted and soaker hose laid around them.
Hardening off some starts that came out of my bedroom. I love the clear sides of this planter. It makes for perfect seedling spot. On frost nights, I just covered with that thin garden cloth that looks like super thin batting. On a few very cold nights, I added cardboard to the sides for extra warmth. We had a few SUPER crazy windy cold nights. And this protected my plant babies wonderfully.
**Cue dreamy eyed look as I think about using this material in future greenhouse.
Started path from deck to shed. This pic is before work started.
I laid out where I wanted the path, cut "garden underpants" (My daughter's name for landscape fabric) to fit the path. Then marked out path more precisely with stakes and twine. Dug out the grass section. Covered grass section next to path that I want to kill. Picked up trailer full of free sand. And picked up trailer (half full) of free pea gravel. Today's work here is to lay out bricks and see how far they will go as edging to the path. And cut out some roots that are in the path.
Other projects not pictured:
Picking up materials to build shade wall onto the giant planter
Raking up LOTS of bags of my giant sycamore tree leaves.
Cleaning up flowerbeds, getting rid of fall dead stuff
Deep watering trees and raspberries
Rain gutter project to lead water from down spout across path and over to flower bed
Planting hydrangeas, white lilac, one nursery trip visit.
Thanks for coming with me on my garden adventures. I hope this inspires you to recycle, reuse, find free materials. Dream big and grow what you eat.
This was just a quick update on projects so I don't get so behind. My goal is to post twice a week and update everything I'm working on. Future posts will be more detail. I'll get the blog looking nicer too as I have time to figure it out.
Happy Gardening! Go find an adventure in your outdoor space.
